My husband and I recently adopted a puppy from the local humane society. When we got her home, she was a normal, happy, playful puppy. But within a few days, symptoms of kennel cough showed up.
So like a good pet parent, off to the vet I went.
I chose my dog’s vet based on the online ratings I saw on Google. They said this vet was the “best vet in town,” “caring,” “knowledgeable” and that people “wouldn’t trust their pups with anyone else.” And the vet’s website emphasizes his trustworthiness and that health is the office’s first priority.
However, my experience brought to mind that for people, as well as businesses, who we say we are and how we actually act can often be quite different.
After three visits in three days, I was completely disillusioned with the quality of service I received. No amount of four-star ratings on Google will change my opinion. My vet may think he is trustworthy, but I feel like he just wants my money.
At Compassion we describe ourselves as:
- authentic
- collaborative
- creative
- effective
- focused
- honest
- inclusive
- professional
- and respectful, to name just a few.
This is our personality. This is who we think we are.

But do we actually live up to this? Or are these just adjectives we have used to label ourselves?
Every decision we make is based on our “distinctives” — child focused, church based, Christ centered and committed to integrity. But are we really who we think we are?

Exceeds all my expectations! Very helpful! They’re great at e-mailing back answers to ALL my questions which have been MANY! I wish they updates the photos of the kids more than once every two years. But, otherwise, AMAZING!

In todays secular terminology, I would advise my phone calls, my requests for information, my experience with Compassion have all “exceeded my expectations”. Life gets real busy, and I am so grateful for Compassions collaborative efforts in making me slow down, not just think about my child but to appreciate the role God has given me in some ones life. It is a blessing when I reflect on, and communicate with my sponsor child. I believe this program has done more for me than I have done for Compassion. Shows how we do not understand, and cannot comprehend the calling of the LORD.
I want to please my God and Lord in all that I say and do by his power. I have every little yet he guides me so that never lack. I will bless others especially those children that are far from my town. I am very proud of the young man that I help support. I pray for him often.

Compassion is THE BEST organization to work with! You get open and honest answers fast and their customer service is superior!
When I lost my first compassion child due to the center closing down, I received a call and an email to let me know. I was so distraught! I spoke to a young man over the phone and he was so compassionate and helpful! He prayed with me and explained everything to me in a way I could understand!
Since then, I never hesitate to contact anyone at Compassion because I know I will get the help/answers I need!
Praise God for the work that you are all doing to release children from poverty in Jesus’ name!

I have visited all 3 children we have sponsored…. 2 of them have graduated from the program…. Like any organization you have marketing and reality. I think compassion does its best to live up to its mission statement. They do work with the local church and effectively reach out into the local communities. But some people/ students just can’t be helped…. I have sponsored 2 students until 18 years old and I don’t think they really have been released from poverty…I hope and pray so…but are they still going to church, do they have jobs and food…are they having children they can not feed…? I can not afforded sponsoring an LDP student but I think it’s the best thing compassion does. I have been so impressed by all the LDP students I have talked too. They have really been released from poverty….
I adore compassion and enjoy the magazines you send out with information and stories. I tell others to sponsor children through you and no one else.
Your organization is, in my opinion, all it professes and strives to be. My only “complaint” is that it takes so long for correspondence to get from the sponsor to the child and/or from the child to the sponsor. Is there anything that can be done to speed up the process?

The correspondence process does take about 2-3 months due to all of the steps in the process. We are constantly working on improving it, but it takes time. I have been a sponsor for 10-11 years, and have even been on several tours to meet my kids. In all that time, I have only had one phone call be a negative experience. The rest of my interactions w/ compassion staff have been great! The tour leaders are amazing, in country staff so happy to see us and eager to show what they do, and phone contacts w/ folks at Colorado show them to be helpful, concerned, understanding, and even sad for me when a child has left the program. Whomever I am talking to is always willing to answer questions, and if they can’t, try to find the answer for me. I think those who work for Compassion represent all those things listed above, and more. God bless!
