Change of Heart

“You are just trying to strengthen your community,” said Asman. I had barely finished explaining about the Compassion logo he had seen on my cell phone. Voices inside me raced to pacify his accusation; however, better sense prevailed, and I left him to ponder his own perception.
Asman is my neighbor, a follower of Islam, and a student of law.
Later in the night, he called me to apologize. I could sense honesty in his tone. When I asked about his sudden change of heart, Asman replied, “You are a believer, and I am a believer, too, but I see that you are doing something about it.”
Asman’s perception had changed by what he had seen while walking back home that day. He had seen small children wearing school uniforms, speaking in English. As he got nearer, he recognized them. They were kids who once begged and sold chewing gum on the street he walked every day.
Asman learned from the children that a person from a local Christian organization had approached their mothers to help educate them. He was happy for the children, happy that there was less sadness around. It didn’t matter how it happened. Asman had seen and understood.
“You do something similar, don’t you?” he asked me. “Much more,” I replied confidently.
We have a vision to bear fruit, much more fruit. Asman’s acceptance of the fact that we are making a difference is important for us — especially because he is from a different faith and is well educated. It means we are achieving our goals.
Acts 9 shows the conversion of Saul. Asman may not become Paul, and I may never know what he shares with his community about our work with Compassion, or how their opinions may be changed. But one life has been touched.
Big dreams begin with one little step.
Immediately, something like scales fell from Saul’s eyes, and he could see again. —Acts 9:18a, NIV
Prayer: Dear God, change our hearts and renew our minds. Bless our plans so that we bear much fruit and glorify your name. Amen.
