We have just decided this week to begin supporting a child from this center. What a surprise to see this article online talking about this very center!
Thanks for the insight and update.

@Chris Giovagnoni - Oh Chris, thank you for this update although it breaks my heart. My prayers are with this family but I am comforted that they got involved with Compassion when they did. God bless this program and those girls.

Nydia has passed away. The details provided by the country office are below.

Sayuri's mother was receiving chemotherapy until the doctors found out the cancer spread. She was sent home with pain killers.

One week before she died, the godfather of one of her children took her and her children to his house. Nydia died at this man’s house.

All the medical expenses were covered by the medical insurance. The child development center helped with the burial expenses.

Nydia had five children; three of them from a first marriage. They are 20, 18 and 14 years old and then two girls of 12 and 4 years old. They are staying in the patio of this man where they have some beds but no walls.

This man will help them until August, but then they will need to find a shelter for the girls. He has hired the older children to work with moto-taxis.

The church and the development center have committed to support the family.

That is where the local church community steps in, along with child's extended family.

Children are admitted to the projects prior to being sponsored. Hence, a newly formed center (in this case June 2008) will have a high percentage of unsponsored children.

Thank you for sharing this story with us. Two of my angels are from Peru - one from Lima and one from a mountain community several hours north of Lima. I am so glad that Compassion is there for these precious children.

I, too, wonder what will happen to Luis, Rosa, and Sayuri, if cancer takes their mother. Will their older brothers care for them? I will keep this family in my prayers.

I agree that stories like this personalize global issues and help us better understand the impact Compassion can have through our support and prayers.

Please keep personal stories like this coming. With one million children sponsored :-), I know there are many more stories out there!

Thanks for sharing!!!

Thank you so much for this excellent post -- it really personalizes stories for us; puts a name and face to the children and their families. I will be praying.
