The Front Lines

Fresh out of college and excited to be in Indonesia, I was finally on the front lines* of ministry.

A romantic at heart, I considered the front lines of foreign ministry to be my evangelical destiny. I had trained years for it and couldn’t wait to live it.

After a few months, however, the romance began to fade as I realized the front line wasn’t very different from my life back home. Other than cultural differences, the day to day was the same.

A more mature concept began to take hold: Living my life in accordance with His purpose, not location, determined my front line.

That was more than 30 years ago. Today, I serve in the Global Ministry Center, maintaining The SOURCE, the ministry’s internal website. I could simply say it’s my job, but it’s much more than that. It’s what is in my hands to do according to God’s purpose for my life.

It is my front line of ministry, and it is in Jesus’ name.

*Front lines: The forward line or leading position of battle; often used in evangelical terms to define the leading position of a ministry.

Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might. —Ecclesiastes 9:10a, NIV

Prayer: Lord, thank you for giving us the gifts and talents we use to serve You, wherever and however that may be. Help us to do so mightily in Your name.
