He Will Teach, Instruct, and Guide

Have you ever been in a situation where you know that something has to be done, but you have no clue how to go about it? I once led a team of three Partnership Facilitators in Uganda to assess 20 potential Church Partners in the western part of the country.

Ugandan staff meeting

Day three into our exercise, the entire team felt the assessment matrix we were using was rather subjective — not arming the team with strong enough justification why some potential Church Partners failed to make the cut — and contrary to what was expected during the vision-casting trips to the region.

When you have been holed-up in a hard-to-reach area, retiring to a run-down lodging place with a sore back due to daylong assault on your body as a result of “apparent-roads-in-pot-holes,” the last thing on your mind is creative thinking.

That’s exactly what the team felt on the fourth night. Innovation and creative thinking were in short supply. “Let’s defer the matter,” the team said lifelessly.

The following morning, to our astonishment, one team member came up with a brilliant conceptual framework to improve the tool. We actually thought this person was feigning shortness of ideas all along.

He lightly responded that before asking the Lord to give His beloved sleep that night, he petitioned Him based on Psalm 32:8 — “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go;
I will guide you with My eye.”

We learned that in every journey we should continually commit to God the steps on the way to where we are going. For in Him, we move and have our being to bear good fruit, fruit that lasts. Without Him, we can do nothing.

I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go;
I will guide you with My eye. —Psalm 32:8, NKJV

Prayer: Heavenly Father, all our plans and ways we commit to you. Instruct and teach us in the way we should go. Guide us with your eye, and give us the ability to pay heed according to your counsel, that in all we do, your name may be glorified. Amen.
