Helping Haiti: Our Food Kit Distribution Process

We continue to procure and deliver relief supplies through our staging area in Florida and our two supply warehouses in Haiti. We estimate that 1,000 emergency relief food kits are arriving in Haiti daily, some of which are donated by church partners in the Dominican Republic.

Food kits are put together in the Dominican Republic and delivered to our Port-au-Prince warehouse via large trucks. In high-risk areas, we use security assistance from the U.S. Army, though at times this draws unwanted attention. As food and relief supplies become more readily available, there will be less of a need for this.

Smaller vehicles from our Haitian church partners come to our Port-au-Prince warehouse to pick up the food kits.

Each food kit gives a family of five one meal a day for two weeks.

Is there any need for volunteers in Florida or the Dominican? I feel so helpless and would love to do anything I could to help out the Haitian people. Continued prayers to Haiti. Thank you Compassion for your support in Haiti and around the world!

      Gretchen,

So many of us can identify with what you’re feeling – even Compassion employees here in Colorado Springs. We want to do something. We want to help in deeply passionate and sacrificial way. We want to be in Haiti, helping carry the burden for others, physically, spiritually and emotionally. But sadly, for those of us with these feelings there is no outlet, at least through Compassion’s ministry at this time.

We are directing our energy and relief efforts through our strategic organizational partnerships as well as qualified individuals within Haiti itself. However, I personally suspect that at some point in the future we will have opportunities for U.S. churches to do short-term mission trips in Haiti. So there is hope.

We have been praying for Whatline (HA 396), our Compassion child for 10 years. She graduated out of the program last year. When I saw Jacques Simeon on the video, the project director for the Delmas Development Center where she attended, my heart leapt. I searched the face of every young woman in the video hoping to see Whatline. Is there any way we can find out if she is alive? We had the privilege of meeting Whatline in 2005 on the last trip Compassion was able to make to Haiti.

Praise God for all the work you do for those beautiful people in Haiti in His name.

It is amazing how an earthquake destroys buildings and raises up love and compassion. God bless every donor around the globe. It is heart-warming to know that Compassion is truly a family.

This is wonderful to see! Truly a great film — and we will continue to support our brothers and sisters in Haiti.

Wow! I was going to post a comment asking to see what was inside the food kits (similar to the picture and description posted awhile back about disaster relief kits). But, I was just thinking a picture and words. Chris, I am guessing you or someone on your team came up with this idea and it blows me away how much more vivid the video is compared to a picture and list of items in the kit. Thank you!!

I am so happy to see that supplies are getting through to the people who need it. Thank you so much to the staff, and relief workers who are trying so hard to relieve some of the suffering. Thanks be to God for His provision.
