Snowflakes for Your Sponsored Child

Winter is not my favorite season. I am a summer person, most definitely! By the time most of you read this post, I will be on my first sponsor tour…in Mexico, enjoying some tropical, summer-like weather!

But as I look forward to wearing summer clothes and being in a warmer climate, I realize that most of our sponsored children have never seen snow. They have never seen the beauty of a snow-filled forest or a snow-capped mountain. They have never held a delicate snowflake in a mitten covered hand.

Most of our work is in tropical countries, so our children seldom get to play in the snow. But in the highlands of Bolivia at an elevation of more than 14,000 feet children at BO-446 “frolic” in the remains of an overnight snowfall.

As much as I dislike winter, I love snowflakes. You see, no two snowflakes are alike. Just as God created each one of us as unique individuals, he also created each one of our sponsored children to be unique individuals.

A couple of years ago, my children and I found a book called Snowflake Bentley. This gentleman photographed snowflakes back in the late 1800’s. His photographs are amazing and show the intricate details of a snowflake. This ended up being a great theme for letters to our sponsored child!

We sent images of some of the photographs of snowflakes from Mr. Bentley. But coffee filters make great snowflakes too.

You and your kids can even ‘build’ a snowman for your sponsored child! Be sure to include extras so your sponsored child can build one too!

build a snowmanHere are a few questions you can ask your sponsored child this month.

  • What is unique about winter where you live?
  • Have you ever seen snow?
  • What is your favorite thing about winter?
  • What is your favorite winter holiday?

Now it is your turn to help us find some great winter ideas for our Pinterest Second Friday Letter Writing Club board! Not a member of the board yet? Be sure to follow us on Pinterest and leave a comment below with your Pinterest URL so I know to add you to our growing group of “pinners”.

Question: I see a lot of things to print to send the kids, but they are all in english. How do we get them in our kids language?

    1. Susan Sayler October 22, 2014

Hi Diane! I just sent you an email invite to the group board on Pinterest. Happy Pinning! Our translators will translate everything on the coloring page, greeting card, etc. into your child’s language. If there is no room on the item itself for the translation, our translators will attach another sheet of paper with the translation.
