While I agree with the notion (and direction), I certainly do not agree with the phraseology. The words we use must be chosen carefully so as not to cause another man to stumble. Much of what has been said here merely adds fuel to our critics fire. The word 'marketing' is offensive, it does not represent anything Jesus ever said or done, and therefore should be banned from all Compassion literature.

<i>"Semantics,"</i> you say?

Perhaps, but I say the more we draw on worldly policies and practices, the less we draw on Jesus and His. The Marcus Buckingham 'experience' of two years ago is still very fresh in my mind. If you may remember, his teachings were logical, and his delivery was funny, but it flied in the face of every Biblical teaching I ever received...And somehow he slipped through Compassion's radar.

This is not about (if) Jesus would use the internet and media if it were available to Him, because the true is it is available to Him and He is using it. So the answer is not if we use it, but how.

Dude, you are right on. There are too many Christian organizations that are stuck in the 80s, 70s, even 60s! Tried and true processes are good ways to go - but what if in the last 10, 20, 30 years there are have been GREAT ways created? Online techniques to get your message out and get other people to spread to word for you is the sweet spot. Online is where you will find your Compassion evangelists that will go out and tell friends, family or even strangers about the great things going on and how they can get involved!

Not to diminish what any of us have already said, I do agree with Hannah that caution is prudent, when following trends. Fortunately, I trust Compassion enough to be sure that no trend will be followed that in any way violates the values we hold so dear, or to the extent that our values are compromised.

Hannah is, of course, also correct in her statement about sponsorship abandonment; I'm not sure how that ties in with the post or other comments, though.

I heartily agree with Julie and Vicki. For new generations to catch the vision of Compassion, we need to speak their language and go where they are.

Let's be cautious with "trendy".

Today's trends are hastily abandoned for the sake of change. sponsor abandonment only reinforces Satan's lie that children have no worth in God's kingdom.
