It is truly one of the main reasons, why I am so privileged to be part of the a group like Compassion. I used to smuggle Bibles onto ships from Communist countries during the Seventies. Seeing people cry when they got a Bible made an impression on me. The little children during the time of Christ who wanted to become a Rabbi would have Genesis through Deuteronomy, the Pentateuch memorized by the time, they were 8 years old and by the time, they were 14 years old, they had the whole Old Testament memorized.
