Child Development Centers Affected by the Haiti Earthquake

UPDATED: Mar. 6, 2010This downloadable PDF lists all the child development centers in Haiti and categorizes each center as: not directly affected, moderately affected or significantly affected.

Six child development centers and one child survival program previously designated as not directly affected have recently reported several children and siblings of sponsored children as having been injured in the earthquake. They have also reported many houses that were damaged.

These centers are now considered moderately affected.

  • HA-260
  • HA-272 and HACS19
  • HA-602
  • HA-670
  • HA-796
  • HA-811

help Haiti website graphicA significantly affected child development center:

  • is located within the official “impact zone” as defined by the United Nations and Haitian government
  • has reported deaths or injuries to children
  • has reported significant damage to the church or other facilities
  • has reported significant damage to children’s homes, with many homes destroyed

A moderately affected child development center:

  • is located outside the official “impact zone”
  • has not reported any child deaths
  • has reported only a few injuries to children
  • has minor damage to the church or other facilities
  • only reports damage to some children’s homes

Child development centers listed as not directly affected are located outside of the official “impact zone” and have not reported any deaths or serious injuries to children or damage to any church facilities or children’s homes.

The PDF does not detail how each child, leadership student or baby and caregiver we serve has been specifically affected. In most cases, we don’t have that information yet, and getting specific information about each of the 65,000 children we serve will take us time to obtain and report.

In the significantly affected areas we are searching diligently through the “tent cities” around Port-au-Prince to determine the condition of your children. The only way to do this is through a grassroots, tent-to-tent approach. The process is slow, deliberate and difficult, but it is moving ahead steadily.

tent city in Haiti

Our church partners in the outlying areas are sending people to our supply stations to pick up needed supplies as well as report on the condition of their facilities, their staff and their sponsored children.

With these circumstances in mind, please be aware that at this time we cannot categorically say that all children in the “unaffected” centers are unaffected. The probability is high, but there are situations, such as travel, where a child or student may have been in the “impact zone.”

We will update the PDF as we get more information, but we will not report specific child information via the Internet.

If your child was affected by the earthquake, we will contact you directly. Even if your child wasn’t directly affected, you will be contacted, although the timing may be slower and the method may be different.

Accuracy in what we report is vital. As we receive information about specific children, we need to verify that it is correct. This fact-checking means that getting the information to you takes longer, but we are doing everything we can to get it to you as quickly as possible.

Many people have asked, “If it turns out my sponsored child is alive but orphaned, what can we do about adoption? Who can we contact?”

We cannot assist in the adoption of these children. However, if you are interested in adopting a Haitian orphan we can recommend Bethany Christian Services, as an adoption agency working to help the children of Haiti.

We continue to publish more complete updates about our response to the Haiti earthquake on our Haiti Earthquakes Updates blog post.

  3. Jody Honsal March 3, 2010

    vandk-
the only way i got any info was to go on google and look for that island (la gonave, in your case). there might be a blog where people are talking about it. i actually found a connection to my sponsored child that way who found him and sent me a picture of him. 🙂 try it. it’s worth it. good luck!

  4. vandk March 2, 2010

Does anyone have any info on
HA-811? Our sponsor girl is on the island of La Gonave. I haven’t heard much of anything about how the island was affected.

    God Bless

  5. Amy Robinson February 23, 2010

I pray every day for the work if Compassion, especially for my child, Chistopher. I do not know whether he is alive. He is new to me and we have never corresponded. I feel bereft.

  6. Jennifer Washburn February 14, 2010

The child’s number will be HA XXX-YYYY. The HA XXX number should be the number of the center. The child survival program I believe is a different program at the same site, maybe for younger children. Hope that helps.

  7. Jody Honsal February 10, 2010

I found another avenue how to find my sponsored child who was at HA-310. Gatlove is our sweet little 6 year old boy that we sponsor. We found that he is okay, thanks and praise to God! I don’t know why it is taking so long for Compassion to get back to the other sponsors with the news of their children. People are sitting on pins and needles here. I googled the town he was from and started blogging with townspeople to find my little guy and thank the Lord someone knew him and is going to set us up to communicate soon. Just a suggestion.

  8. Joann Cousin February 10, 2010

      Joann,

Yes. I am a Compassion employee. I manage Compassion’s social media, which includes this blog.

The support commitment for child survival programs is $20 a month. If you’d like to have that added to your existing sponsorship, please use the Contact Us form in the right-hand sidebar to send me your sponsor number, address and phone number.

  10. Chris Giovagnoni February 10, 2010

    Joann,

If you would like to become a supporter of the Child Survival Program affiliated with your child development center, let me know. It is possible.

  11. Joann Cousin February 6, 2010

    Chris Giovagnoni,
I would like to know more about the CSP connected with HA310.
    Thanks,Joann

    1. Chris Giovagnoni February 8, 2010

      Joann,

Is there something specific you want to know about the CSP affiliated with HA310? Are you asking if there is a way for you to support the program?

  12. Todd Swigart February 1, 2010

We have a boy in HA-310 which is in the significantly affected. There was a “Child Survival Program” reference mentioned on the PDF. There was a designation listed there of HACS4. What does this mean? Is there any way we can find out more about this program?

    Thanks for your work.
    Todd Swigart

    1. Chris Giovagnoni February 2, 2010

      Todd,

If you would like to become a supporter of the Child Survival Program affiliated with your child development center (HACS4), let me know. I found out that it is possible.

    2. Chris Giovagnoni February 2, 2010

      Todd,

You can learn more about our Child Survival Program (CSP) at http://rescuebabiesnow.org. How it works, the philosophy behind it, etc.

I also recommend these blog posts Child Survival 101 and Child Survival: The Motive Behind Our Effort. Of course, there are a lot of CSP related blog posts in the Child Survival category.

I’m looking into whether the CSP that is affiliated with your child’s development center is fully supported or if there is an opportunity for you to help support it.

  13. Vinessa Johnson January 30, 2010

Thank you for your update. I see that David’s center, HA295, is one that is now listed as being significantly affected. I will keep praying for him, his family, all the Haiti people, and all the Compassion staff. May God be with each of them and all the sponsors of these precious Compassion children.

  14. Glenn Fincher January 29, 2010

Like the rest of you, we continue to wait & pray for all of “our” kids. Thank you to all of the fine Compassion employees who are working so diligently for all of Haiti.

  15. Faith January 29, 2010

Our Nephthali is at Bourdon739 – thanks for the update. I’m extremely concerned. Praying!

  16. Penni Anderson January 29, 2010

Thank you so much for keeping us as informed as possible. Keep up the good work you are doing in Haiti and know that I am praying gratefully for you.

  17. Lindy January 29, 2010

Thanks so, so much for keeping us informed. We appreciate with all our hearts your labor of love for our children. We have two sponsored boys, Klebinsky and Vicson, in the significantly affected area, and we are praying and praying for them, for their families, and for all the Compassion teams and staff!

  18. Joann Cousin January 29, 2010

I can feel all of the prayers throughout the world with this new updated list 1/29.
Please continue to pray for the children, their families, staff and the country of Haiti!
These next few days and weeks are going to be very difficult.

  19. Vinessa Johnson January 29, 2010

My lil’ guy, David, is in HA295. I know this center is not listed yet as being affected. I was wondering if it’s because you have not heard from them and cannot obtain information, or you have heard from this center and they are okay. I worry so much about David and his parents, and all the Haitians. I know the Bible tells us not to worry in Matthew, but it’s so hard not to. I do pray for God’s protection, guidance and comfort for all these people. He is the only One that can make all things new. May God bless all of you at Compassion! I know you have each been overwhelmed with questions, comments, etc. May God provide for all your needs and sustain you through this tragic event. Continue your works!!!

  20. Tammie January 29, 2010

I am still looking for word on any children in HA-688. I am hopeful as I believe this is a good distance from Port Au Prince. But I will continue to pray and hope for these children and their families and all of the workers as well.
    GOD BLESS

  21. Stephanie January 28, 2010

    Jody ~
The second numbers, beginning with HAC, are the numbers of Child Survival Program projects. Many of the CSP’s operate out of the same churches/locations as child sponsorship projects. CSP works with pregnant mothers and children up to age 3.

  22. Kathy Silvea January 28, 2010

I see that my child’s center is not on the list-#266. Her name is Horloudemi. Thanks to the Lord for he has been helping give me patience & faith that Horloudemie & her family are OK. My family, my friends & my church family continue to pray for all of those in Haiti whether they live there or are there helping. Please give us news as soon as possible on our children.

  23. Roberta Kelley January 27, 2010

We are still waiting to hear about our child in Haiti. His Haiti area number is HA675. It is not on the list. Maybe someone else’s child is located there also. His name is John and we have been praying for him and all of the compassion families and children.

  24. Julie W January 26, 2010

I wonder if there is any news from Chalon Child Development Center 789? Our sponsored child Roseline is in that program.

  25. Shirley H January 26, 2010

There is a map available on Flicker that has the numbers of the centers listed and a line pointing to the area where each is located. My child Daniela number is 303 and she is located south and west of Port-Au Prince. I am praying the she lived far enough away from the epicenter that things for her family might not be as bad as if she were right there in the city.

  26. Lisa Burns January 26, 2010

Is there any way to know the location of your child’s center by its number? Our child’s center number is 264, which has not yet been reached. We don’t even know if he lives in or near an area affected by the quake. There are many maps of the quake-affected area online, but I don’t know where to begin. Thanks.

  27. Kathy Miller January 25, 2010

When I clicked on link above to see 4 pictures of my child’s center 313 I got a slide show with many photos and no captions. Does anyone know which 4 photos are 313? Thanks God bless

    1. Chris Giovagnoni January 25, 2010

      Kathy,

Click on the link underneath the slideshow that says “You can also view this slideshow in Flickr.” In the window that is displayed, in the upper right-hand corner, click on Show Info, that will reveal the titles of each image. The images of HA313 have the center number listed in the title.

  28. teresa January 25, 2010

Have been searching for information on center HA708. Haven’t seen it listed anywhere.
Praying this is a good sign.

  29. Mike January 25, 2010

HA-830 is just northeast of Port au Prince http://maps.google.com/maps?sourceid=navclient&rlz=1T4ADFA_enUS348US348&q=map+of+haiti&um=1&ie=UTF-8&hq=&hnear=Haiti&gl=us&ei=-_5dS5bVEoGvtgee89ilAg&sa=X&oi=geocode_result&ct=title&resnum=1&ved=0CAwQ8gEwAA

That is a google map link that may not work. If you google ‘map of Haiti’, you can zoom in a few times and you will find ‘Mais Gate’ – that is where 830 is located according to our paperwork on Wendy Louis. I have not heard anything further about the center. Blessings, MIke

  30. nancy January 25, 2010

anyone hear anything about the center at HA-808 ? our little girl Dieunata is their. anyone else sponse a child in center 808 ? thanks.

  31. Becky January 24, 2010

HA-829 and HA-830 are not on the Flickr picture from January 2009, does anyone know where they are located? Near Port-au-Prince?

  32. Jody Honsal January 24, 2010

    Su,
In response to your comment, my heart is right there with you. I know it sounds crazy, but I feel so connected to my little guy, Gatlove, that if he is still alive, God willing, I hope Compassion looks into some referral for adoption, that is, IF the child has no where else to go and no other family left in Haiti. People are careful to “leave them to be raised in their country”, but there is NOTHING left right now. I feel desperate to go down and look for him myself right now. I’m trying to put it all in God’s hands right now. He is STILL in control.
I know Compassion is doing all it can do right now. Thank you for your hard work. I truly mean that.

  33. Mary Egbertson January 24, 2010

Beth, My boy Lazard is also at Center 805. I will pray for them both, along with all the other children and workers.
    Mary

  34. Denise Sills January 24, 2010

I am so worried for my child I sponsor HA-254. Please let me know word on her. I am so worried think of her all the time……

  35. Queen of the Click January 24, 2010

I appreciate all of your work.

It’s so hard waiting to hear…I wish there was a website that listed the centers and children that have checked in….just first names to protect the kids as well

  36. Angie January 23, 2010

It’s so hard waiting to find out. I don’t believe because the center is not listed this is necessarily good news. I just think it means they haven’t heard from that center yet. My child’s center is not listed, and i know she was only 7km from Port-au-Prince, i’m very worried and sure wish i would hear something!

  37. Karen Corgatelli January 23, 2010

Thank you for all your efforts down there. We are praying for your workers. We sponser a girl at HA-128 — any word from there yet? We are worried…

  38. Beth Rummel January 23, 2010

Thanks for keeping us updated. My child Daphcar at CDC805 is constantly in my heart. If anyone knows of her, please tell her we love her very much.

  39. Camille January 23, 2010

Thank you, Chris. I know you haven’t forgotten. I appreciate you’re help and all that you guys are doing! You’re all in my prayers. I got a letter last night from my little boy that he wrote me right before Christmas. I cried and cried as I read his sweet little letter, telling me how I could pray for him. Sharing Bible verses and telling me how thankful to God he was for me. I know it was a gift from the Lord because I’ve been so worried about Archile. God’s timing never ceases to amaze me. Lord, please bring glory to Your name.

  40. Jody Honsal January 22, 2010

Our little guy, Gatlove, is at HA-310 which is listed above, but I don’t understand what the second number indicates? Could somebody clarify what that means? It says it’s the “child survival program number”, but what does that mean? Anybody know?

  41. Laura Witt January 22, 2010

I am searching for HA322??? If their center is not listed does that mean they were not affected.

And my heart is breaking for ALL of those that are.

  42. Sarah January 22, 2010

My little girl is in HA-610 which is in Thiotte, Thiotte is a smaller community which– I thought– was about 100 km from Port-au-Prince but now I’m seeing HA-610 on the list and one of the pictures says that HA-610 is IN the city???? Please tell me this is just a typo??????

  43. Deb Richardson January 22, 2010

We are watching for information for Romano from Center 743. We are so grateful for all the work and grace as you assist the people of Haiti. Our prayers are with you and the people of Haiti. God Bless You.

  44. Marina January 22, 2010

My son Kyle and I are praying for our little guy Luckner at child center HA784 listed above…. We are looking forward to any news we can get. We continue to pray for all the children and families devestated by this earthquake. Any news from HA784 would be appreciated….

    God Bless…..

  45. Jeanette Buchanan January 22, 2010

Praying and hoping and wondering about Widly from 319. Thanks for all of you in the middle of everything.

  46. Lawrence and Judith Linman January 22, 2010

How can I find the status of Jeanne #HA-717? Thank you

  47. Angela January 22, 2010

Praying for Colson HA724 Any news would be appreciated!!!

  48. Amy Larson January 22, 2010

My child is at Nazarene Delmas 33 Child Development Center…I didn’t see it on the list, but it is only 3 km east of Port-Au-Prince…is it perhaps known by another number?

  49. Chris Giovagnoni January 22, 2010

    Camille,

I haven’t received an answer to your question yet, but I haven’t forgotten about it.

  50. Elizabeth Williams January 22, 2010

My compassion daughter was at HA-763 any word from there yet? Her name is Jennifer…i keep praying and praying

  51. Louella Nethercot January 22, 2010

My girl is in one of the centers on the list. I am praying that she and her family have escaped injury. My heart is so heavy when I look at these pictures and I know they do not fully show how bad the damage is. Thank God for Compassion and all the work you do.

  52. Hannah January 22, 2010

Our long-time sponsored child from Haiti is 21 yrs old now and out of the program. I am sad because there is probably no way to find out if he is ok or not.

  53. Matt Windsor January 22, 2010

Anxiously awaiting word on our child, Minaha, who lives at HA724, which was affected by the earthquake. However, many are in the same boat as I am; and I will continue to pray for the children, their families, and their safety and wellbeing.

  54. Deaun January 22, 2010

Thank you Compassion for being my eyes and ears in Haiti, my Ericka’s center is not listed 683 and I praise God for that, but I am praying for each and every person and child in Haiti, I pray that many will come to the saving grace of our Lord & Saivor, Jesus Christ.

  55. Steve Norris January 22, 2010

First let me offer a most sincere thank you to all of the Compassion staff for the amazing job you continue to do in keeping us up to date on the latest news from Haiti. Our prayers are with you, the sponsored children and their families and all of Haiti. We are patiently awaiting word on our little child Guy at HA-779. Even though we know this center was heavily damaged, we are trusting in the Lord for the safety of Guy and his family. Everyone, please continue to pray fervently for all involved.

  56. Gillian January 22, 2010

Thank you for your continued efforts to keep us informed. What a long and hard task that must be for you all and your are doing excellent work. Heartbroken to see our boy’s centre on the list ….. we are praying for him and his family and for the staff and their families! This is one of the hardest waits I have had in many many years! We love you all …. stand strong.

Phil 4:13 ~ I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

    God bless you all! G

  57. Richard Heestand January 22, 2010

Thank you for posting the list of affected centers you have received information on. Is that information posted anywhere? Even a short 1-2 sentence summary would be helpful. Thanks for the work you are doing to help us know what is happening.

  58. Katherine Johnson January 21, 2010

Thank you for keeping us updated. My child’s center (720) is not on the list, but we continue to worry and hope to hear about her and her community soon.
    Continuing in prayer.

  59. Paul Clutterbuck January 21, 2010

Where are HA-829 and HA-830? These are not on the Flickr map, and are probably even newer than HA-828 (Corail), where I sponsor. According to the USGS map, Cap-Haitien (where HA-828 is) was largely unaffected by the quake. Are 829 & 830 nearby, or nearer to the epicenter?

  60. Shelley Berg January 21, 2010

Thank you for your published list and for keeping us so well informed during this difficult time. I am thankful that my child’s center, 713, is not on the list right now. My prayers are with both the victims and all the volunteers struggling to bring them aid.

  61. Allen Keller January 21, 2010

    God be with you.

  62. Robert & Julie DeLoach January 21, 2010

Thank you for keeping us as informed as you can. I just learned that our little girl is located at one of the affected centers. I am sitting here with tears running down my face but with great hope and faith in our loving God to accomplish His will in the midst of this crisis. We will continue to pray for all of you and your needs as well as our child and her family.

  63. Sye TenBruggencate January 21, 2010

My boy (Woodler) is in 204. Looks like that is the area closest to the epicenter. Hope and pray that he is okay.

  64. Cam January 21, 2010

This is difficult to read, but I know we serve a mighty God. I know having to say good-bye to those we love is so difficult, but I hold onto the hope of being reunited in Heaven.
    Psalm 147:3

  65. Mandi January 21, 2010

Our sponsored child, Christy is in center 353. We have been praying for her and her family. Thank you for the updates. We are anxiously awaiting more news.

  66. Joanne Marino January 21, 2010

Thanking you all for keeping us
    informed and praying for Haiti,
all the children and staff. Sad
to see my child’s center listed
but hoping that God has protected them all. Don’t grow
    weary in well-doing.

  67. Joann Cousin January 21, 2010

Thank you Compassion for all that you are doing keeping us informed. We are praying for your staff and will continue to do so.Do we know when the updated info more than 100 deaths is that a total of all 28 centers?

  68. jamie b January 21, 2010

Su-I would love to know as well!

  69. Desiree January 21, 2010

Center HA-314 is not on the list yet. I hope that is good news. Midride is my child/friend and I am hoping that you all will contact her center soon and find out that she is ok. She has been my sponsored child for eleven years and I can not wait to hear good news. I will keep praying.

  70. Su January 21, 2010

Our little Mack (Mackenson) is in HA-726. Thank you so much for this list and everything you are doing. We are praying so much for you and the children and their families.

If it turns out he is alive but orphaned, what can we do about adoption? Who can we contact?

  71. Amy January 21, 2010

Praying for all the children and their families, and staff!

  72. SH January 21, 2010

My child’s center is 303 – and not on the list – I pray this is a very good sign. I am in prayer constantly for the victims, for those who are there to help. There is a emergency team from the university medical center I work for on the ground there. What they are reporting back on the blog is heartwrenching!

  73. Chris Giovagnoni January 21, 2010

    Camille,

I’m double checking for you. The report that we received listed HA784 twice. I’m not sure if that was a duplicate and it should be another number or if it just was entered twice by accident.

  74. Camille January 21, 2010

Thank you guys for all that you’re doing. I am praying hard for you all. I do have a question though; in the list of child numbers above there is two HA-784. Is that a mistake? I’m just wondering because my little guys is HA-785.

  75. Chris Giovagnoni January 21, 2010

    Keven,

HA-CS9 is affiliated with the child development center HA-739. Since HA-739 is on the list of affected centers, we will get information on it.

  76. Caitlin January 21, 2010

Lisa, I believe your child is in the same center mine is. If that’s true, her number should start as “HA-204-####” if you register with OurCompassion, you should be able to find at least ten people who sponsor in that center.

It’s so good to get some more direct information.

  77. keven January 21, 2010

Thank you for the update on the CDCs. Any word on Child Survival Programs? Specifically for me HA-CS9 in the Bourdon district

  78. Beth January 21, 2010

Look on any correspondance you have about your child. Your child’s number will start with “HA” , then three numbers which represent your child’s center. Praise God our Debbie’s center 312 in Anse-a-Galet is not on the list currently.

  79. Georgeann January 21, 2010

The first three numbers after the HA in your child’s number are the center.

  80. Chris Giovagnoni January 21, 2010

The numbers in this post are the first five characters of your child number.

A child number looks like this: HA-123-456

HA stands for Haiti. The next three characters are the child development center’s number. And the final three characters identify the child specifically.

You can view your child’s number on any letter you have received from your child.

You can also view it on the account summary page of My Account on compassion.com.

If you speak with a sponsor relations representative at 800-336-7676, that person can assist you as well.

  81. Shannon January 21, 2010

I just need to know how to find out what my childs number is (ha-) Im not sure what yall are talking about and I just want to find my child I sponsor and his family. To know they are ok????/

  82. lisa January 21, 2010
