I just came home from living 2 weeks in that poverty in the Philippines. One thing missing from the pictures is the over powering smell. We didn’t leave at night and go back to our nice hotel. We slept in a bamboo hut with 3 or 4 others on mats on the bamboo floor. The frogs and geckos were so loud I really thought I’d never sleep but I did. We had electricity part of the time so the rice was cooked in a rice cooker other times it was boiled over a tiny little fire. We ate rice 3 times a day. Sometimes with green leaves in it and tiny little fish for protein. Each day Sersi went to a market to get rice and fish for the day. Some days a lady came by selling bananas. Sometimes I walked to a shop and bought little bread rolls. The water pump was open from 6 – 10 am and 4-6 pm. Everyone carried water to fill the garbage can in the bathroom for flushing and bathing and the drinking water bucket. It really opened my eyes.

I love your statement, “The presence of dignity doesn’t mean poverty is absent.” During my recent trip to visit my sponsored child in Colombia I had to consciously remember that these children were poor because their smiles, appearance and generosity so overshadowed their need.
