We had two daughters, ages 12 and 16, and I was approaching the age of 55. I enjoyed having children, but I knew that the time to have more had passed.
It sounded difficult to have another child, and I knew we didn’t have the resources to take care of another. So imagine my astonishment when we discovered that my wife was pregnant!
I was completely taken aback and became very upset by this turn of events. When we met the doctor, he remarked, “You should look happy that you are going to have a baby!”
Returning home, I got down on my knees and asked the Lord to help me through these unforeseen and trying circumstances. I told him that I didn’t know how to handle this. I wanted Him to speak to me clearly and sought a specific word from Him.
The very next day, He answered me. As I was having my quiet time, He gave me this word: “If you do it to the least of these, you do it unto me.” The Lord wanted me to care for this baby as if I were doing it for Him.
Later we found out that it was not one baby—but twin boys! Two miracles!
Just before they were born, I was invited to join Compassion International, which provided me with a stable income. As the country director, I dialogue with pregnant and new mothers from our Child Survival Program. With my experience of sleepless nights with twin babies, I am able to identify with their struggles.
Anuhas and Anupam have not only completely turned my whole life upside down, but they have been a gift to our whole family! Our home is filled with excitement, joy, and laughter, and we are bonding once again as one big, brand new family!
“The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’” —Matthew 25:40, NIV
Prayer: Dear Father, help us realize that children are always a blessing from you!
