How to Tell Others About Jesus: 5 Steps

Telling others about Jesus means sharing the simple gospel with them. And that’s easier than you might think! Here are five simple steps you can follow to tell the beautiful story of Jesus with others.

  1. We’re all sinners. Sins are those bad actions we take, such as stealing, lying or being selfish. And all of us are sinners, born right into sin (Romans 3:23).
  2. Sin separates us from God, our Father. That sin separates us from our perfect God (Isaiah 59:2). And the penalty for our sin is death (Romans 6:23).
  3. Jesus died as a sacrifice for our sin. But in God’s love for us, he sent his Son, Jesus, to Earth. He lived a perfect life and was then crucified to pay the penalty we couldn’t ever possibly pay (Isaiah 53:5).
  4. Jesus rose from the dead. After three days, Jesus arose from the dead, fully defeating death for us all (Matthew 28:6).
  5. We can now be forgiven and have eternal life. Because Jesus paid the penalty of death for us and then rose to life, we can be forgiven of our sins and have a personal relationship with Jesus now and for eternity.

If you’d like, feel free to copy/paste/print these steps. Or save them to your phone. That way, you’ll always have a step-by-step guide for explaining the gospel with you.

Leading Someone to Christ

After you share the gospel, the person you’re talking to just might want to start their own journey with Jesus. That’s great news! If so, you’ll want to lead them to becoming a Christian, which they can do in three steps:

  1. Admit you’re a sinner in need of Jesus.
  2. Trust that Jesus died on the cross and rose again.
  3. Commit your life to following him.

A perfect next step is talking to them about attending a local church, where they’ll get to build relationships with others who love God and can encourage and support them.

3 Helpful Tips for Talking About the Savior

We know it can be a bit scary to share your faith with others. Here are some tips to help you talk about the Savior with confidence.

1. Be Honest & Authentic

You don’t have to use the prettiest of words. You don’t have to share a sermon. The key to telling others about Jesus is just being open and honest. God has placed specific people in your path that only you can reach. Don’t be afraid to be yourself and use your own words to share Jesus with them.

When you do, you can trust that God will do the rest. You might feel ill-equipped. You might feel weak in the moment. But like 2 Corinthians 12:9 says, God’s power is made perfect in our weakness. Be open about Jesus and trust that your Father will do the rest.

2. Don’t Be Afraid to Say, “I’ll Find Out”

As you share Jesus with others, they’re bound to have questions. But you don’t have to have all the answers. Don’t be afraid to say, “I’ll find out” or “let me dig a bit deeper” if you’re unsure in the moment. This will give you time to dig into the Bible, reach out to your pastor for insights, etc.

3. Share Your Unique Story

“They triumphed over him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony; they did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death.” — Revelation 12:11, NIV

The word “testimony” comes from the Greek word marturia, which means “to bear witness.” Your testimony is the story of how you’ve witnessed Jesus in your life. And it’s a powerful story that can defeat the enemy and bless the lives of others!

When sharing Jesus, be sure to share your own unique story. What has Jesus done for you personally? How has he protected you? Healed you? The truth of your story brings Jesus to life for those you speak to. After all, if he did all of that for you, he can do it for them too.

How to Talk About Jesus Without Saying a Word

You’ve heard the saying, “actions speak louder than words.” And James 2:26 (NIV) says, “As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.”

It’s not always about what we say but what we do. Sometimes, the best way to share Jesus with others is by taking action. As we live out our faith through action, those around us will take notice. And some may ask, “What’s different about you?” opening the door for us to share Jesus with them.

Here are some practical actions we can take:

  • Put Jesus first. In a world where it’s all about “me, me, me,” you can share your faith by putting Jesus first. Choose to pray before eating a meal. Read your Bible before scrolling on social media. Take time to pray for the Father’s direction before making a decision. By putting him first, you’re showing him and the world that he’s the true Lord of your life (1 Peter 3:15).
  • Show love and kindness to others. As he walked on Earth, Jesus was noticeably different. He ate dinner with tax collectors and sinners. He touched the untouchable and loved the unlovable. And this love and kindness? It changed lives. We can be different too by showing love to those around us. Choose to forgive when someone hurts you. Offer to help when someone’s in need. Befriend the friendless. Your acts of love will show others just how loved they are by Jesus.
  • Give of your time or finances. Jesus was also a giver. He used his resources to feed the 5,000. He gave up his time to heal and teach. By following in his footsteps, you can share what God has given you to share the gospel too. For example, you could volunteer with a local charity or simply reach out to your elderly neighbors and offer to grab their groceries. You could also help a child living in poverty by becoming a child sponsor.

Meet Jonathan: Sharing Jesus Through Puppetry

There are many ways you can tell others about Jesus. Jonathan, a Compassion kid in El Salvador, shares the gospel in a fun and unique way: through puppets!

Abandoned by his father, Jonathan was registered at his Compassion center when he was just 11 months old. His mother, Bianca, was alone without a job or a place to live.

After being registered, Jonathan and Bianca began receiving meals as well as one-on-one biblical mentoring. It was through this mentoring that Bianca realized God had a unique plan for Jonathan’s life.

As Jonathan grew, Compassion tutors noticed his ability to capture the attention of others. He was often chosen to read Bible verses or be the master of ceremonies at special events.

Inspired by his ability to speak with confidence, Bianca spoke to Jonathan about creating videos to share the gospel. The first video did so well that Jonathan wanted to do more. So he grabbed his mother’s childhood puppet, Rosita, and began using her to create videos that teach children about Jesus.

When Compassion staff saw what Bianca and Jonathan had done, they invited them to use the center’s facilities and helped them with tools to record more videos. And to mature Jonathan’s gift, the center also invited him to join Predi-Kids (Preaching Kids), a program that empowers children to share the gospel.

Now, Jonathan is part of a group that records videos every week for children and their families. At just 10 years old, he often preaches or shares a reflection on a Bible verse.

Jonathan is changing lives by telling people about Jesus in his own unique way. You can do the same! Remember: God has called each of us to go and share the good news. And if God has called us, he has also equipped us.

“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”  — Ephesians 2:10, NIV
