In the heart of Rwanda, where resilience echoes through the vibrant landscapes, a 19-year-old girl named Sekata found herself walking a path that many in her community could only dream of.

Growing up in a country marked by hardship, Sekata faced personal trials early in life. After losing her mother, she was raised by her grandparents, who did their best to provide, but resources were scarce. Despite the obstacles, Sekata’s dreams of a better future never faded.

The Power of Education

Her life took a transformative turn when she found refuge at Compassion’s child development center. There, the staff recognized her potential and provided the support she needed to pursue an education that once seemed impossible.

“Education is the key to unlocking the doors of possibility,” Sekata often says, her words filled with the conviction of someone who knows the weight of missed opportunities. For her, education wasn’t just about gaining knowledge — it was about creating change and nourishing both body and spirit.

This deeply rooted belief drove Sekata to pursue her studies with relentless passion, first at the Rwanda Coding Academy, then at Africa Leadership University Rwanda, where her dedication to education continues to shape her vision for a brighter future.

Dreams Turned Into Purpose

While Sekata excelled academically, her journey was about more than just schoolwork. While at the Rwanda Coding Academy, she became acutely aware of the challenges her community faced, particularly malnutrition — which looked like constant hunger and anxiety over when children would eat next.

This reality inspired Sekata to take action by embarking on a mission to combat malnutrition and empower the children in her community to reach their full potential.

A Digital Solution for Balanced Nutrition

During her time at the Rwanda Coding Academy’s robotics club, Sekata conceived the idea for BALDI, short for “Balanced Diet.” She knew there had to be a way to use technology to help families fight back against malnutrition-related diseases.

“Most of the available resources were textbooks, so I wanted to find a digital solution.” — Sekata

That’s how BALDI, an online startup, came to life. It’s a mobile app that provides easy-to-understand information about the importance of a balanced diet — nutrition that’s both affordable and sustainable.

“BALDI is personal and user-friendly. Anyone can access it,” Sekata says. It even allows users to connect with doctors and find guidance on nutrition-related inquiries.

Empowering Communities, One Balanced Meal at a Time

For Sekata, BALDI isn’t just about food — it’s about empowerment. She created a tool that allows families to take control of their health and well-being, bridging the gap between abundance and scarcity.

“I wanted to reclaim control over our health and happiness,” she shares, and with each challenge she faced along the way, she grew more determined.

Rooted in Compassion

“Compassion International is the root of my life-changing journey.” — Sekata

Since the age of five, Compassion has been a constant presence in her life, supporting her education and providing other essentials, like good nutrition and even mentoring.

“The project staff always encouraged us to be the change we want to see in our community. This motivated me to work hard and aim higher,” Sekata recalls. Compassion’s influence helped shape her into the leader she is today.

Now pursuing a bachelor’s degree in software engineering at African Leadership University, Sekata continues to inspire others.

Sharing in pride in her achievements, Pacifique, the Compassion project director says, “Witnessing Sekata excel and positively impact the community fills me with immense joy. Her success is a testament to the ripple effect of knowledge and compassion.”

Building a Brighter Future for Rwanda

Sekata’s story is more than just her own — it’s a beacon of hope for many. As she continues to grow and make a difference, her journey shows how, with education and compassion, children can grow to transform lives and communities.

“Seeing Sekata succeed reminds me that education isn’t just about individual achievement — it’s about lighting the path for others to follow,” Pacifique reflects.

Sekata’s vision to combat malnutrition with BALDI is proof that one person’s dream can nourish an entire community.
