Do you have someone in your life who prays for you? A parent or a best friend who regularly cries out on your behalf?
Now let’s flip that. Do you have someone in your life who you pray for? A child or a neighbor who is always on your heart, in your mind and filling your prayers?
Where does the child you sponsor fit in that equation?
You might be surprised how often he or she prays for you. How often your letters and pictures bring prayers of thanksgiving.
So, I would like to issue a challenge. Earlier this month, people around the United States celebrated National Day of Prayer. And today, we want to celebrate the (unofficial) Compassion Day of Prayer.
Today, will you pray for that child you sponsor?
If you don’t know where to begin, start with a prayer for health and safety and, most of all, love. Look at her last letter and hunt for a seed that will help your prayers grow. Did she mention being sick? Pray for that. Did he talk about his dad looking for work? Pray for that. Look at his pictures, scour her words, and pray.
And then, the second part of the challenge. Let them know you prayed. Remind them that someone a thousand miles away is thinking of them. Praying for them. Loving them. Remembering them.
Because we think it’s that important, we’re giving you a little template.
Dear [Name],
I wanted you to know that today I prayed for you. I prayed that God will fill your life with good things and that you will never forget just how much He loves you. I prayed for your health and the health your family. I prayed that you will do well in your studies at school and that God will prepare you to accomplish all of your dreams. You are dearly loved – I pray you never forget that!
Love,
[Your Name]I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy.
– Philippians 1:3-4 (NIV)
Make it your own, or simply cut it, paste it and send it. Whatever you do, take a moment today to cover that child in prayers – and let him know he is on your heart. Today and always.
