NBA, NFL, NHL, MLB and MLS. If you know what each one of these acronyms stands for, then you must be a sports fan. Sports are pretty beloved here in the United States.
But do you know that sports are popular in other countries? You will be surprised to learn what sports are enjoyed in some of the countries where Compassion works.
In Burkina Faso, soccer, handball, cycling, basketball and boxing are popular. In Colombia, where one of our sponsored children lives, soccer is the main sport, with major league games being played throughout the year.
What sports are popular where your sponsored child lives? You can find that information easily on the Compassion website.
Sports are a great topic to talk about with our sponsored children. Consider asking these questions:
- Do you play any sports? If so, what sport do you play?
- Do you have siblings who play a different sport than you do? If so, what do they play?
- What sports do you like to watch?
- If you could learn to play a new sport, what sport would you like to learn?
Now for a couple of pins from our Second Friday Letter Writing Club on Pinterest to share with you that fit our theme for the month:
This looks like a great way to share the gospel using a soccer ball.
Coloring pages are easy to print out and send to our sponsored kids. How about this baseball player?
Do your kids play any sports? Be sure to take pictures of them while they are playing, then send them to your sponsored child. If your child plays a sport that your sponsored child might not be familiar with, take time to explain the game in your letter.

Great ideas!!
Thank you Jennifer 🙂
This is a wonderful post! We love baseball, and our sponsored son from the Dominican Republic also loves baseball. Therefore, it is a frequent letter topic. We have also recently become fans of college football as we began cheering for our university’s football team, so we think it would be fun to create a letter about American football to send to our children. We have many children in our Compassion family who enjoy sports from soccer, basketball, baseball, and volleyball, to the not-so-recognized netball (worth researching). This is a great way to relate to our sponsored children and share a passion for recreation, teamwork, and physical fitness along with many other lessons along the way.
Miranda, I am glad you enjoyed the post!
