An intense earthquake has left the small island nation of Haiti in “total disaster and chaos,” according to U.S. officials. Registering a magnitude of 7.0, it struck late on Tuesday afternoon and has done damage that will not be measurable for some time.

The UN stated in the new that search and rescue operstions were ending. Since I have not heard or read about my sponsored child HA806 does this mean he is ok? Or that the services have not located him or his family..I would like to know one way or another if the services are continuing to search formissing or that this child is missing.

    God bless and protect you.

I see that my sponsored Child’s center was on the list that has been affected. My heart aches for the loss and the lame because of this event. I have and will continue to pray for Haiti and the compassion teams there. Please keep us informed.

@Lucy. Compassion will let the sponsors know as soon as possible if their child was directly affected by the earthquake. However, communications are still not optimal and it is difficult for Compassion to reach all the projects, i.e., many roads are full of debris and it takes multiple trips through different routes to get to them (latest updates; http://blog.compassion.com/haiti-earthquake-update/ ). Although your child’s center is listed as being directly affected by the earthquake, that does not mean Compassion has word on your child’s status ( http://blog.compassion.com/haiti-earthquake-hild-development-centers-affected/ ). Many families left the devastated area and others are living in tent cities scattered throughout the devastated areas. Because Compassion does not yet know the status of each child yet, there is no way to know if your child is missing. Official rescue efforts are over, but search and rescue operations did recover a person from the rubble today, so clearly not all operations have ended.

All we can do is pray, give, and wait patiently for Compassion Haiti staff to continue their amazing work and once they know about your child you will be contacted. Compassion’s blog stated even if your child was not directly affected, but was in an area that was, they will contact you (but presumably not until after they contact sponsors whose children were directly affected). Another sponsor on OurCompassion mentioned it took 4 months to get official word that her child was directly affected by the flooding in Gonaives, which was much less damage than the current earthquake. Compassion needs to address immediate needs and work to account for over 6500 children in Port-au-Prince alone, plus surrounding areas. That is a daunting task to ensure accurate, timely information!! Communications in Haiti, the poorest country in the western hemisphere, just are not as efficient as they are here in the US. In a disaster zone as Haiti is now, it will take quite a bit of time for information to be confirmed, so please pray as the rest of us are praying for the Haitian people and patience for all the sponsors to wait until Compassion has more information on their children!

We received letters from our two sponsored kids last week. Now we don’t know if they’re alive. We were all tearful last night at dinner as we considered that possibility. God is in control and He is using Compassion in a big way. We are praying for you.

Thank you to all the Compassion staff who are working so hard to try to meet the needs of the Haitian people. I know the Lord will give you the grace and strength you need in the days ahead. From reading the posts previous to this one, all of us as Compassion sponsors are lifting you up in prayer. I do hope to hear about our sponsored child, but know it may take many days or weeks before I hear anything. God bless you!

We pray daily for the people of Haiti and all of the Compassion staff. May the love and blessing of God give you strength for doing God’s work. We thank you all.
We also pray for all of the sponsor children and their families.

We are trying to get an update on our sponsor child Emmanuel Lafague (#HA-396-2382). Does anyone have any information?

We are still praying mightily for Danalove (CDC 751) and all others in her center, and throughout Haiti.
May we know if her CDC is functioning again? Might it be now among those combined centers, which appear to be a wonderful idea in the interim?
Thanks to CIHaiti for the on-going struggle to serve through all this devastation.
    Eager for any further word,
    Prayerfully,
    Pat & Sharon
